Why Braces?

For most people, a beautiful smile is the most obvious benefit of orthodontics. However there are many advantages of orthodontic treatment such as improved chewing function, reduction of excess tooth wear, and improving the ability to clean your teeth properly. After your braces come off, you'll feel more self-confident as you enjoy the look and feel of your new smile.

How Orthodontic Treatment Works

Orthodontic braces can be made of metal, ceramic, or a combination of the two materials. These brackets are bonded directly to the teeth. By placing a constant, gentle force in a carefully controlled direction, braces slowly move teeth to a corrected position. This is a great time to wear braces! Gone are the days when a metal band with a bracket was placed around each tooth. You can choose the color of the ties that hold the wire in the brackets. Dr. Malan utilizes special wires that are less noticeable than they used to be and the latest materials move teeth faster with less discomfort to patients.

Another new technique that works well for some patients is the INVISALIGN system. This system uses a series of clear plastic guides to move the teeth to their proper position. Be sure to ask if your case meets the qualifications to be considered for this exciting new way to straighten your teeth.

Duration of Treatment

Treatment time in our office typically ranges from 18 to 24 months depending on the growth of the patient's mouth and face and the severity of the problem. Patients grow at different rates and will respond uniquely to orthodontic treatment, so the time to case completion may differ from the original estimate. The patient's cooperation in following prescribed instructions is an important factor in completing treatment in a timely manner. Interceptive, or early treatment procedures, may take as few as six months in younger children.
