For Children

It's best for the orthodontist to see children by age 7 to advise if orthodontic treatment is required and the best time for that patient to be treated. The first permanent molars and incisors have usually come in by that time and crossbites, crowding, bad habits, deep overbites, growth asymmetries and other problems can be evaluated.

Most children will not require early treatment, that is, while "baby" teeth are still present. However, it is important to identify those children who do need early treatment. When treatment is begun early, the orthodontist can guide the growth of the jaw and guide incoming permanent teeth. Early treatment can also regulate the width of the upper and lower dental arches, gain space for permanent teeth, avoid the need for permanent tooth extractions, reduce likelihood of impacted permanent teeth, correct thumb-sucking, and eliminate abnormal swallowing or speech problems. In other words, early treatment can simplify or eliminate later treatment.

For some, a timely screening will lead to significant treatment benefits; for most, the principal immediate benefit is a parent's peace of mind. For those children who do not require early treatment, we will include in our observation program at no charge to monitor development every 6-12 months. This ensures that we do not miss the ideal time to start full treatment in the future.

Many children will be ready for complete orthodontic treatment around age 12 as the last of the “baby” teeth fall out. Treatment at this time usually involves comprehensive alignment of the teeth and jaws to ensure proper function and aesthetics. Older children in their late teen years can also receive treatment with great results; however, some limitations may be involved if they have completed jaw growth as we will be limited in our ability to modify jaw position.

If you have children 7 years of age or older, they should be seen in our office for an orthodontic examination. We realize that it is difficult for parents to recognize on their own the best time for orthodontic treatment. At Malan Orthodontics all initial exams and future observation visits are performed at no charge. You can be confident that the right time for your children’s treatment will be recognized so they can receive the confident, beautiful, healthy smile they deserve.
